Weapons of Mass Destitution This "weapons of mass destruction" thing is really confusing! Let me see if I've got this straight. If a geiger counter picks up so much as the radium dial on a wristwatch, we're got a perfect right to bomb the snot out of any other country, because they might be building a "weapon of mass destruction." On the other hand, the thousands of multi-megaton warheads we have sitting in silos all over this country cannot be classified as "weapons of mass destruction," because we are the "good guys." i.e. We would never drop and atomic weapon on a civilian population (more than twice). This also goes for the millions of gallons of nerve gas, and other nasty stuff, that we have squirreled-away in bunkers in the New Mexico desert. Chemicals stored in bunkers in the desert are only "weapons of mass destruction" if the other guy does it. It's one of those "do as I say, not as I stockpile" sort of things. The thing that keeps throwing me is that I am an American. I believe in the concept that everyone is equal under the law (equal protection). It is, perhaps, the greatest tenet upon which this country is founded. If it's wrong for the "bad guys" to do something, then it's wrong for the "good guys," too. I do, however, think I've finally got a handle on this thing. What we call "weapons of mass destruction" are ones that will kill people as cheaply as possible, well within the budget of even the most egregiously impoverished third-world countries. Conversely,
the grossly overpriced "weapons of mass destitution" our government
has pumped trillions of our hard earned dollars into are not evil, because,
although they still kill lots of people, they have the redeeming qualities
of making defense contractors filthy stinking rich and providing lavish
retirement schemes for Pentagon generals. |
